Our
history
From 1951 onwards the craftsman and musician Francisco
Garcías i Roca dedicated his working life to the
restoration of pianos.
In the 1970s his son, Pere-Josep Garcías i Hernandez,
who had studied music, art and business, worked with
maestro Jaime Elías i Arasa - the last piano
manufacturer in Spain.
Jaime Elías i Arasa started his career back in the 1890s
at the Chassaigne Frères factory, where he made
keyboards. At the beginning of the 20th century he
worked as a piano tuner for the Cussó S.F.H.A. factory
and he learnt how to build pianos from a number of
leading manufacturers of the day. In 1912 he founded his
own workshop and factory in Barcelona, moving to
Mallorca in the 1930s.
Don Jaime and his colleagues shared their trade secrets
and knowledge with the enthusiastic youngster Pere-Josep
Garcías, who thus learnt all about building, tuning,
repairing and restoring pianos and all types of keyboard
instruments.
From the 1980s, Pere-Josep, now with his own business
Pianos Can Garcías, travelled regularly to Barcelona and
throughout Europe (Germany, Austria, France, Great
Britain, Czech Republic) to continue learning from the
great piano makers.
In 2007 he decided to unify his workshops in Palma
(Mallorca) and Pamplona (Navarra) under one roof in the
Mallorcan town of Selva, at the foot of the Tramuntana
mountains, where he continues his work with pianos
together with teaching
